Curse of the Zombiesaurus is the newest downloadable expansion to the World of Keflings universe and it is full of spooky fun. A Graveyard for Keflings was included in the promotion where you could vote for the next DLC Ninjabee did an internal poll and this was the DLC they believed would win so they began work on it as the promotion was finalized. In the beginning of the promotion it looked like Graveyard would win in a landslide as it was quite a ways above the others. In ended up coming in second because many of the fans decided they didn’t want more zombies and pushed Candy for Keflings ahead in the polls. As it turns out Graveyard would still be made and it would become much more than a zombie fueled cliche.

Pros:

Theme: Over the past few years there has been a zombie craze and now they have almost over saturated the entertainment industry. This is what many fans were worried about when the concept was first introduced but like Ninjabee always does, they made an expansion that flows well and doesn’t end up being something we have already played or seen. The only real way zombies come into play is that the spooklings look like them, most of the other characters are other creatures from supernatural mythos. The king of this region is Count Kefula and he has an acquaintance named Wilhelm the grave keeper, and then you will eventually recruit the help of a Frankenstein type builder kefling. The world itself is also creepy, you will venture through a spooky forest, across a river of ghosts, and even into graveyards. While doing these things you will task your spooklings to gather brimstone, ectoplasm, and bones to build your buildings. All of these things combined make for a great new kingdom to explore.

Humor and References: Yet again Ninjabee has brought plenty of humor with its new addition. There are plenty of jokes to be had and lots of references to try and catch. The names of some of the characters we mentioned are even nods to some well known classic horror films and other things like Ghostbusters and The Simpsons. I love seeing all of these included within the games and it is fun to try and identify them all.

Scarecrows & Cannons: Scarecrows work like the robots of the space DLC, they are faster and more efficient than your normal spooklings. They can do the work of a few low level spooklings as soon as you acquire them, so sticking them on a resource you need many of works out great. Another feature that makes a reappearance is the cannons and they look just as spooky as the rest of this new kingdom. I was very happy to see both of these things make a return and after finishing this review I am going to attempt to make some great things with the cannons.

Length and Story: Like all of the other kingdoms, the story for Curse of the Zombiesaurs is told at a level that younger audiences can understand. I’m not saying that it isn’t fun, because it turned out to be one of my new favorites. Ninjabee does a great job at bringing older and younger generations together in a family friendly environment. This DLC took around two and a half hours in co-op , so there is plenty of content to play in this kingdom.

Cons:

Cornfields: While this was not a huge deal, I do wish that instead of needing multiple cornfields for extra scarecrows, that we could have created them all from the same cornfield. Some people may feel that the extra ones will clutter their kingdom.

In Conclusion:

Curse of the Zombiesaurus is another stellar expansion for the World of Keflings universe and it only costs 320 Msp. Just like all of the other DLC for the game Ninjabee has packed it full of pop culture, humor, and love for their fans, while the story make take some twists and turns you will enjoy playing through this DLC. I can’t wait to see what they have for us next.

Humble Heart’s Dust: An Elysian Tail was the winner of the 2009 Dream.Build.Play challenge and because of this it was pick up and published by Microsoft instead of just going onto the indie games channel of Xbox Live. Winning that competition and showing off the games potential was one of the best things that could have happened for the game. It gave them more money to create this masterpiece that plays like platformers of old and is one of the breakout games of 2012.

Pros:

Combat: The combat in Dust is very simple but I never got tired of it and always wanted to go deeper into the game. The X and Y buttons account for your attacks and can be comboed together for devastating damage. You eventually get access to a whirlwind attack that can be combined with Fidgets ranged attack to hit enemies hundreds of times in mere seconds. This whirlwind can also be used when jumping to soar through the air. These easily mastered controls combined with the detailed graphics make all the fighting you will have to do easy on the eyes and enjoyable.

Graphics: Dust has a graphic style that may as well be considered moving art. It is so pretty it will melt your eyes only to put them back together with the promise of more gorgeous adventures. The whole game is hand drawn and you can see the love that was put into it from all the amazing details.

Cameos: Stan Lee may be the king of cameos but the indie community are the ones that make appearances here. You will find friends like Gomez from Fez, Tim from Braid, The Kid from Bastion, and the Maw. Other games like Super Meat Boy, Audio Crew, Spelunky and the Dishwasher series are all represented as well. These appearances aren’t the only thing to make you smile because many pop culture references made it into the game as well. This really was a service and I was happy to see these things make it into the game.

Avatar Awards: The game comes with some avatar award Tshirts based off the three main characters of the game. The gorgeous art of Dust, Fidget, and Ahrah are all on these shirts that you avatar can show off when playing games that utilize them. They are gained at various story points in the game and I really enjoyed unlocking them.

Content Galore: With the amount of content that Dust has, it could have easily sold for twenty dollars and still have been worth it. At the price of fifteen dollars it is a steal and the main story alone will have you playing for hours on end. If you were to do all of the side missions, harder difficulties, and full percentage complete we are talking even more hours and it would be a better deal than some retail games.

Cons:

Fidget: Dust has two companions on his adventure, a sword named Ahrah and the flying creature named Fidget. Fidget is similar to Navi from the legend of Zelda series in that she is a guide around the world and she can tell when treasure is near. She is also annoying in the same way that Navi is and she lives up to her name and makes you Fidget in your seat sometimes when she talks.

In Conclusion:

Dust: An Elysian Tail is a beautiful game and a great way to end the Summer of Arcade for 2012. you will go on an epic adventure that will bring you deep within the world of the game. It will also bring back many memories of older side scrolling games and is a true fan service that I would reccomend to anyone.
